Mai Tsushima reflects on her Freshman Year
Mai on court, representing Texas Wesleyan
"It has been a year since I joined the Texas Wesleyan tennis team, and I can honestly say it has been a great experience.

"During the fall semester, I was not eligible to compete, so I didn't get the chance to play in matches. Even though I couldn't compete, I was still able to practice with the team every day and support my teammates. That made me feel like I was already part of the team, and I still got to experience what college tennis is like.

"One of the things I appreciated the most was the team environment. Everyone always brought positive energy to practice. You could always hear someone cheering, saying "Let's go Rams!" or "Let's go Blue!" There was never a quiet moment, and everyone genuinely wanted to encourage each other. From the very beginning, I felt welcomed and included, even before I was able to play.

"When the spring semester started, I finally had the chance to compete. Playing team matches made me feel even more connected to everyone. We had a really successful season, finishing with a 19–3 record, and I think our team chemistry became even stronger as the season went on. I'm really happy that I got to be part of such a great group of teammates and coaches.

"The spring semester was definitely busy. There were a lot of matches, traveling, and schoolwork, so sometimes it was challenging to keep up with classes. But I found that it was manageable as long as I stayed organized. We also had a lot of fun during our trips. Whether it was shopping in the cities we visited, eating together after matches, or just spending time with the team, those are memories I'll always remember.

"Academically, I think Texas Wesleyan gave me a good balance. The classes were manageable, but being a student-athlete meant I had to learn how to manage my time, especially during the season. It taught me how to stay disciplined and balance both tennis and school.
As an international student from Japan, I was also able to meet so many wonderful people. I made friends that I'm really grateful to have met, and they made my first year even more enjoyable. Moving to another country can feel overwhelming, but everyone made me feel comfortable, and I'm very thankful for that.

"On the tennis side, I feel like I improved a lot, not only in my game but also mentally. My toughest moment was losing an important match at the conference tournament. I felt disappointed because I wanted to help the team more, but that experience motivated me to work even harder for next season.

"Looking back, my freshman year was full of new experiences, challenges, and great memories. I'm very thankful for the opportunity to study and play tennis at Texas Wesleyan University. I'm excited for what's ahead, and I can't wait to continue improving both as a student and as a player."
